Rodrigo Santoro is a Brazilian actor.
Rodrigo stared studying Journalism at PUC-Rio. He joined Actor’s Workshop at Rede Globo. He made his acting debut by appearing in Globo’s telenovelas, including Olho no Olho (1993), Pátria Minha (1994), Explode Coração (1995), O Amor Está no Ar (1997), Suave Veneno (1999) and Mulheres Apaixonadas (2003). In 1998, he also made an appearance in the miniseries Hilda Furacão, portraying the character of a priest.
Rodrigo’s breakthrough performance was with Bicho de Sete Cabeças in 2001. At the outset, he received heavy criticism for his portrayal of a young man who is sent to a psychiatric clinic by his father after being caught smoking marijuana. But at the end of the film, welcoming him was the standing ovation from the audience and critics as well. He also won Festival’s Best Actor trophy.
After this, he was soon cast as the male lead in the much-praised Abril Despedaçado (Behind the Sun) film. It was one of the nominees for best foreign film in the 2002 Golden Globe Awards. In 2003, he made appearance in Hector Babenco film Carandiru. Rodrigo’s was role of a transexual prisoner known as Lady Di.
Next, he was signed by a Canadian director, Robert Allan Ackerman, for ‘The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone’. Next to it was a part in the blockbuster ‘Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle’. And, it gave a rocking start to his Hollywood career and he soon appeared as Karl on the romantic comedy ‘Love Actually’.
During 2002, he appeared in a commercial campaign with Gisele Bündchen. On ‘No. 5 The Film’, he played the male lead. In 2006, he joined the star cast of ‘Lost’. He played Paulo, a survivor of Oceanic Flight 815. He was first seen in the episode entitled “Further Instructions’.
In 2007, Rodrigo Santoro portrayed Persian emperor Xerxes I in the movie ‘300′. His appearance on ‘300′ got him a nomination to MTV Movie Awards in the category of Best Villain.
Rodrigo practices transcendental meditation and is a fan of the band ‘The Doors’. His other interest is reading William Shakespeare’s works. His favorite actors are Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.
